Becoming familiar with the muscles that make up your body has more benefits than simply allowing you to talk shop with your training partners. The more familiar you are with the muscles you&#8217;re working, the better you&#8217;ll be able to judge what&#8217;s needed to make improvements. In this article we&#8217;ll get to know the muscles that make up the mid-section.</p>
<p>The core muscles of the mid-section do much to stabilize and support the torso so it&#8217;s well worth spending time to train this area properly. The main muscles of the mid-section are as follows:</p>
<p>1. Rectus abdominis &#8211; this is a large flat muscle wall that covers most of the front mid-section from the lower chest to the pubic bone. Above the navel it consists of three pairs of rectangular sections stacked on top of each other and is better known as the six pack.</p>
<p>2. Obliquus abdominis &#8211; this muscle runs diagonally along the side of the mid-section from the lower ribcage to the pubic area. There are two muscles on each side, with internal obliques lying underneath the external obliques. The obliques help your torso to flex to the side, twist at the waist and help in bending the torso forwards.</p>
<p>3. Transversus abdominis &#8211; this is the deepest of the abdominal muscles and consists of a thin strip that runs horizontally across the abdomen. This muscle helps keep the internal organs in place, forces out the breath and stabilizes the spine.</p>
<p>4. Erector spinae &#8211; this large muscle group runs along the side of the lower spine. Consisting of a pair, the erector spinae keeps the spine erect and helps twisting at the waist.</p>

<p>After many years of spending hundreds, and even thousands, of dollars, after getting sick on them, and after seeing NO KIND OF RESULTS from them, many have finally realized that they are WORTHLESS.</p>
<p>Yet, many are still confused if the supplements that are sold as &#8220;Meal Replacements&#8221;, &#8220;Weight Gainers&#8221;, &#8220;natural supplements&#8221;, and &#8220;amino acids&#8221; have some good use in substituting for some WHOLE FOODS.</p>
<p>Surely you see them in just about every other page in every-single bodybuilding / fitness magazine.  Everyone at the gym uses them.</p>
<p>Go to any grocery store and they have them there too.  Yes, even you have probably used them and / or are using them right now&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;</p>
<p>Shakes and supplements.</p>
<p>Many different &#8220;meal replacement&#8221; powders and shakes, also known as RTD&#8217;s, are sold as being a substitute for a real, whole food meal.</p>
<p>The makers claim that they are &#8220;just as good, if not better, than eating a real meal&#8221;.</p>
<p>They claim to have higher amounts of protein, lower amounts of sugar, and add in ingredients such as BCAA&#8217;s, Glutamine, Creatine, HMB, CLA, so on and so forth.</p>
<p>They claim that your muscles need a high amount of this and that, and that you can&#8217;t get those from just eating the right foods. &#8230;..</p>
<p>That&#8217;s what the makers claim.</p>
<p>First off, no supplement that is out on the market right now will build any kind of real, permanent muscle on your body, none!</p>
<p>Not creatine (which makes you gain nothing but &#8220;water weight&#8221;), not glutamine, not HMB, not NO2, not any one of them.</p>
<p>If you are skeptical, perform a test on yourself:</p>
<p>For one month, don&#8217;t change anything about your training routine or your eating habits.</p>
<p>Measure your arms, your chest, and your waist with a measuring tape and fat calipers.</p>
<p>Take one supplement, and only one.  Use it for that month.</p>
<p>Then take your measurements again.</p>
<p>I guarantee you  that your measurements will reveal that your arms or chest didn&#8217;t get any bigger or vascular, regardless of what the weight scale says.</p>
<p>Yes, some people report gaining 8-10 pounds of weight after one week of using creatine, but are those 8-10 pounds muscle?  No!</p>
<p>They are made up of water and / or fat.  The measuring tape and fat calipers will reveal that to you.</p>
<p>So, when a meal replacement shake or powder advertises that it is better than eating whole food because it contains all of these extra &#8220;muscle building ingredients&#8221;, don&#8217;t be fooled.</p>
<p>Even if it actually contains those ingredients, they don&#8217;t work anyway!</p>
<p>Second, meal replacements claim to have a certain amount of protein grams, carb grams, and fat grams.</p>
<p>Well, lately there have been several analysis done on many popular supplements, and it has been discovered that many of them do not contain the amount of ingredients as printed on the label!!</p>
<p>Just a while back a report was written that a popular &#8220;protein bar&#8221;, that claims to taste like Snickers, contained up to 7% less amount of protein than the label claims.</p>
<p>And it contained much more sugar than stated.</p>
<p>Many of these makers &#8220;skim&#8221; on the ingredients to bring the cost down of making those supplements, while lying on the nutrition labels, just to make a bigger profit!</p>
<p>Third, the price.</p>
<p>A meal replacement powder can cost you up to $3.00 PER PACKET, while it would probably cost you $1.00 or less if you were to eat the same amount of calories from real food.</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t know about you, but I rather keep my money in my pocket.</p>
<p>Fourth, and probably the most important out of all, is that powders and shakes contain many ingredients that are down-right harmful to your internal body.</p>
<p>In order to make these &#8220;meal replacements&#8221; into powders and to be able to be stored for long periods of time (for shipping and sitting on the store shelves), many chemicals and preservatives must be added.</p>
<p>What do you think happens when you are constantly putting into your body foreign chemicals and preservatives, substances that are not from nature.</p>
<p>Your body does not handle well those types of unnatural substances.</p>
<p>Instead of making you gain muscle, all you will get is a BLOATED STOMACH, DIARRHEA, and EVEN FAT, since your body doesn&#8217;t digest it well.</p>
<p>How many times have you drunk a protein shake and 30 minutes later you start to get &#8220;gas&#8221;?</p>
<p>That&#8217;s your body&#8217;s way of telling you that it cannot handle that shake.</p>
<p>Also, &#8220;meal replacements&#8221; DON&#8217;T contain vital nutrients that are a &#8220;must-have&#8221; if you want to grow a healthy physique, such as vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, enzymes, etc.</p>
<p>These powders don&#8217;t have any of those things.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t believe me, read the nutrition labels.</p>
<p>On the contrary, whole foods are natural, they contain all of the vital nutrients that your body requires to get big and strong, they are much less in price, and they won&#8217;t cause you to go running to the nearest toilet.</p>
<p>Without a doubt, if you want to gain muscular weight, forget about those disgusting-tasting meal replacement powders and shakes, and eat real whole foods, just like our ancestors did back before the supplement industry came along with all of their lies.</p>

<p>We all have our favorite exercises for each body part but sometimes it is useful to look at our training program from a different perspective. This article outlines a couple of familiar leg exercises with a slightly different twist.</p>

Every bodybuilder and weight trainer will have his or her favorite exercises for each body part. That&#8217;s how it should be &#8211; as you progress through the various stages of learning you&#8217;ll understand what works best for you. It is useful, however, to take stock of your progress every so often and carry out an analysis of where you are and what changes, if any, are needed to move onwards and upwards.</p>
<p>Part of this analysis should include an assessment of the core exercises that make up your bodybuilding training program. In this article we&#8217;ll look at the leg exercises that have proven their worth to serious bodybuilders for many years. Where appropriate a series of exercises suitable for achieving pre-exhaustion will be presented. All exercises should be performed to failure with one set of six to eight reps.</p>
<p>1. Leg extension &#8211; this exercise will allow you to isolate the thigh muscles preserving the strength of the other leg muscles for the compound exercise to follow.</p>
<p>- Push the pads until the knees are almost locked.</p>
<p>- Pause.</p>
<p>- Lower with control to the starting position.</p>
<p>2. Leg press &#8211; you can move straight on to this exercise if you are sufficiently experienced.</p>
<p>- Place your feet firmly at shoulder width on the foot board.</p>
<p>- Bend the legs until they are almost touching the chest.</p>
<p>- Pause.</p>
<p>- Return with control to the starting position.</p>
<p>3. Calves &#8211; the best way to work the calves is to perform raises on special gym equipment that allows standing raises and sitting raises to work both calf muscles.</p>

Russian Kettlebells are amazing! These kettlebell workouts may be the answer to maintaining a home gym or having an expensive club membership.</p>
<p>With Russian kettlebells you can develop superior gains over traditional workout methods and save lots of space in your home.</p>
<p>The man who teaches Russian Kettlebell training is Pavel Tsatsouline. He is a former Spetznaz trainer. For those who may not know, Spetznaz is the Russian equivalent of the CIA or special forces.</p>
<p>As every high-risk agent would wish for, after studying some of Pavel&#8217;s books you can definitely find out how to have explosive instant power ready at all times.</p>
<p>But, not everyone is a spy; in fact very few of us are. So what benefits does kettlebell training have for the average woman or man?</p>
<p>Kettlebell training can be a great way to lose weight, tone up the body, and stay in shape once you get it there with the added benefits mentioned above.</p>
<p>And not only that, kettlebell workouts may be better for you than weights. In one of his books, Pavel mentions some of the fitness tests that were used to compare kettlebell training to traditional workouts.</p>
<p>The kettlebell trainers seemed to be in much better shape according to Pavel. And Pavel would know &#8211; You can see a picture of Pavel on his web site. The guy is well muscled and toned for someone that avoids weight training like the plague.</p>
<p>Speaking of muscle and tone, check out the incredible Ab muscles that Pavel can show you how to develope. Pavel, being an expert in physical training combined with his unique experience and insight is fully qualified to show you all about physical fitness.</p>
<p>Whether you are female or male, Pavel can show you the way to fitness. He has also collected for our benefit, what he believes to be excellent advice in nutrition.</p>
<p>Another thing I think that is interesting about Pavel and his work is that he brings his colorful and interesting Russian personality into play. For example, just think of the title of one of his books, Power to the People.</p>
<p>Me? I find that title humorous, but if I had to explain why I think it&#8217;s funny, I&#8217;m not sure that I could. It might be the underlying but subtle notion that liberation is in order for someone. Come to think of it, I guess liberation is in order.</p>
<p>Pavel wants to show us a better way to fitness and free us from our need to spend an inordinate amount of time in the gym and spend it more wisely and effectively, so that we can have great physical fitness and time to enjoy it as well.</p>
<p>As you can see by glancing at his pictures, Pavel not only knows how to develop an amazing physique but he also knows how to keep himself flexible at the same time.</p>
<p>Maybe now you can understand why I think this man has some answers to fitness that we might not be able to find anywhere else, nor all in one convenient location either.</p>

<p>There is this simple yet rarely acknowledged fact that nothing inspires people quite as much as aerobic pictures to get fit and back in shape.</p>

I know how skeptical people typically are about motivational pictures. Everyone has seen and got fed up with that tripe posted on the partition walls of their cubicles  some stranger conquering an impossible mountain against the canvas of a magnificent sunrise with some stupid caption about &#8220;persistence&#8221;, or &#8220;excellence&#8221; under it, or some poor little kitten cutie struggling to hang on to the edge of a table with her babyish claws, beneath which is inscribed, invariably in corresponding bubbly cutesy letters, &#8220;hang on&#8221;. </p>
<p>Hey, you might not believe me when I tell you this. If I were a listener like you, I would probably not believe in it either. Nonetheless, I have an urge to tell you this simple yet rarely acknowledged fact that nothing inspires people quite as much as aerobic pictures to get fit and back in shape. </p>
<p>It is considered a sign of very low refinement even to put such thing up, let alone to confess to be motivated by them  unless you are a middle manager, in which case low refinement is considered more of a virtue than a vice. However, at least in the case of aerobic pictures, it is true. The right picture can really give people that extra push and get them moving.</p>
<p>Well, you think I am exaggerating. No not really. Seeing people sweating every day enables me to tell the gleam of sweat from the gleam of confidence. What I see here is definitely the gleam of confidence. They look at those aerobic pictures and stand up straighter, work that much harder, and I believe, go home feeling a whole lot better about themselves. Even the aerobic exercise classes seem to go better once the pictures are present.</p>
<p>I should know. I am a manager at the Skinny Booty Gym downtown, and I oversee various tasks including decorating the walls. It has given me plenty of time to observe people in their workouts, and the differences that those aerobic pictures make are surprising. Before I stick them up, many people seemed to be just painfully dragging on with their workouts, without hope of ever attaining any fitness goals. Since I put up the aerobic pictures, however, things have taken a dramatic turn. It is like the aerobic pictures lift everyone&#8217;s morale that makes them practically shine with confidence. </p>
<p>After seeing this effect on people, I have even taken down my other motivational posters and put up the aerobic pictures around my cubicle in the gym. Even when I am not doing any exercise, the pictures of fit, trim people doing their aerobics workouts seems to tell me I should put in a little bit more effort into whatever tasks I am attending to at the moment. There are many types of decorations which are more beautiful, more exciting, and flashier than aerobic pictures, but I have yet to find one that exerts a bigger positive influence on the work ethics. And isn&#8217;t that the most crucial thing of all?</p>

As long as the aim of a regular person is not performance, almost all sports can be practiced for keeping the body in a good shape. It&#8217;s all about dosing the training you chose, so that the benefits are bigger than wear and tear&#8230;</p>

1. Sport is for professionals. This idea applies only in the case of performance sports. The native qualities required for professional sportsmen (speed, skills, specific height, etc.) can only be developed, they can&#8217;t be formed by training. As long as the aim of a regular person is not performance, almost all sports can be practiced for keeping the body in a good shape. It&#8217;s all about dosing the training you chose, so that the benefits are bigger than wear and tear. Even the sports considered tough can be practiced in a &#8216;soft&#8217; way (tae-bo, mini-triathlon, jogging, etc.).</p>
<p>2. Training is tiring. This idea is true as long as it refers to consuming all your energy (muscular and hepatic glycogen), but it doesn&#8217;t mean that training gets you into that state of exhaustion which would slow down the process of recovery of the body. Even in performance sports, the purpose is to have rather effective than exhausting training, so that the body can get the stimulation necessary to qualitative progress from one training to the next.</p>
<p>Even more than in other sports, in fitness the sportsman is spared overexerting. However, the training must not become ineffective. People can come to the gym tired after a work day and leave relaxed (physically and psychologically) and not more tired. This is extremely useful for people with sedentary jobs, but also for those who make physical effort at work. They could use the training by choosing a type of effort meant to compensate the one involved in their job.</p>
<p>3. Training takes too long. Again, this idea is true if applied to performance, which can only be obtained by working a lot. But also in this case short and very intense training or training for relaxation and recovery are often performed. In fitness, you can get to 20-minute training, working only super-series of fast exercises, which could involve, directly or indirectly, all the muscles. Anyway, regular training shouldn&#8217;t take longer than an hour and a half. Otherwise, the body will get into the catabolic faze, when the cortisone secretions &#8216;cannibalize&#8217; the muscles.</p>
<p>4. Any type of exercise is good for solving your problems. What&#8217;s true in this refers to some particular cases like excess of adipose tissue. This tissue can be &#8216;melted&#8217; by any kind of aerobic exercise (running, cycling, swimming) if this is continued long enough. Even in these cases it was clear that some exercises are more effective than others. There are situations when only a combination of exercises with a certain amount of each, can provide you with the results you expect. More than that, repeating the same exercise all the time can have as a consequence not only losing balance in the antagonist muscles and in the joints involved in training, but also stopping progress or even regressing. </p>
<p>5. You&#8217;re older? No more exercises! This is true only if we refer to extremely demanding efforts (really heavy weights, fast running, jumping, etc.). There are lots of exercises adapted to different ages. Their purpose is to keep and improve health and also to improve physical shape. The development of movement parameters for older people refers especially to muscular and cardio-vascular resistance as well as mobility of the joints. Because the final purpose of training is not preparing for a competition, the exercises can be organized gradually according to their difficulty, eliminating the risk of accidents. Because it&#8217;s based on perseverance, fitness can be adapted without problems for older people and even for people suffering from different affections specific to old age.</p>
